REMINDER - CALL FOR PAPERS
Abstract Deadline: September 15, 2001
RECENT ADVANCES IN MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION AND MODELING OF PAVEMENT SYSTEMS
A Symposium Sponsored by the ASCE-EM Inelastic Behavior Committee at the
15th ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division Conference (EM2002) at Columbia
University, New York, NY, June 2-5, 2002
(http://www.civil.columbia.edu/em2002/).
[Full-length papers to be published in an ASCE Geotechnical Special
Publication (GSP), sponsored by the ASCE Geo-Institute Pavements Committee]
This symposium solicits papers on recent advances in materials
characterization and modeling of pavement systems. Main emphasis in
materials characterization will be given to mechanics and micro-structure
based characterization of load-deformation behavior of pavement layers,
i.e., asphalt concrete, granular base/subbase, and subgrade soils, using
either refinements on existing laboratory and field techniques or emerging
methods. For modeling the pavement structure as layered media, advances in
analysis should include but are not limited to finite element or boundary
element based static and dynamic methods, as well as discrete element
methods, which address the limitations of elastic layer theory. Of
particular interest will be the application of new materials
characterization and layered media analysis techniques to solving problems
related to modeling of asphalt binder characteristics, asphalt concrete
constitutive behavior, micro-structure and inter-granular effects in
layered systems, anisotropic material behavior, time-dependent deformation
of layered materials, interfaces and discontinuities such as multiple
cracks and crack growth, and rolling wheel effects on pavement response and
performance.
Authors are encouraged to include in their papers any laboratory, field, or
other physical verification of the modeling in order to validate their
approach. Special consideration will be given to papers that present new
and innovative characterization and modeling approaches to preferably
report case studies on design of roadways and airport pavements.
Authors interested in submitting papers to this symposium should send
abstracts of their intended papers electronically to one of the three
contact people by September 15, 2001. Abstracts should be between 150 and
300 words in length. Authors whose abstracts best capture the intent of the
symposium will be notified by November 30, 2001, and asked to submit both
short (4-8 pages) and full-length papers by March 1, 2002. Short papers
will be published on a CD-ROM as part of the conference proceedings.
Full-length symposium papers will be published (subject to peer-refereed
procedure) in an ASCE Geotechnical Special Publication, which will be
sponsored by the ASCE Geo-Institute Pavements Committee.
