What puzzles me is why autoresponders send messages to individuals who post,
rather than to the list, which usually blocks this sort of thing. After all,
it now defaults to the list when you hit the reply button. So how are these
robots detecting the sender's name?

As Michael says, it is only the sender of the message that receives the
autoresponses, not the whole list. I will check with Jiscmail as to why the
software blocks autoresponses to the list, but not to the original sender.
In the meantime, the delete button can be used to remove these messages.
This is a good moment to remind list members that you can suspend yourself
from the list whilst on leave etc. by sending the following message to
mailto:[log in to unmask]:
set psci-com nomail
On your return you can subscribe again by sending the following message:
set psci-com mail
You can view messages that have been sent to the list by accessing the
psci-com archives at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/psci-com.html.
