The "Vote Virus" is NOT a hoax--and everybody who can help spread the word
quickly is being urged to do so because its "social engineering" is likely
to make it all too effective.
This is a file-deleting virus masquerading as a program that enables people
to vote on whether the US should go to war. It's spread via e-mail from
users of Outlook Express. The subject line reads "Peace between America and
Islam!" The message reads "Hi. Is it a war against America or Islam!? Let's
vote to live in peace!"
When the attachment (entitled "WTC.exe") is opened, the virus deletes all
files on the hard drive, then sends copies of the original e-mail message to
every address in the address book. It will also deface any Web pages hosted
by the infected computer with the following message: "America...few days
will show you what we can do!!! It's our turn Zaker is so sorry for you."
Net/Web security people believe the perp to be an opportunist rather than
anyone connected to the Sept. 11th attacks.
Spread the word, and take care--thanks.
