I hope this didn't seem gratuitous. I meant to say that suffering comes of
suffering, and that the suffering of Iraqis and Palestinians must matter as
much as that of Americans, civilised or no. I can't think of anything more
immediately appropriate than Frank's quotation from Blake really. I would
like it to be remembered that the moral impulse behind that quotation was
not "patriotic" but universal, although this is not to say that Blake did
not also love his country.
