Machado attended Bergson's lectures in Paris in 1911 and it
seems that from Bergson's theories of time he adapted a unique
view of memory as being suspect or invented in many ways. His
poem 'The Eyes' demonstrates this. In the late 30s he came upon
Heidegger and I will extract a quote: 'What is being?: Investigate
it in human existence. And to penetrate into being, the only chink
is man's existence, being in the world and in time... That is the
profoundly lyrical note which will draw poets to the philosophy
of Heidegger like moths to the flame.' But most of his poetry
was written under the influence of Bergson whose ideas he developed
in his own way.
I must drag out my Heidegger poem and post it. I also advertise
my simple view of Heidegger in 'The Mary-poems'. But to return
to Machado. He is big, big, big in his vision. A major poet.
