Dear Wim,
Thank you for your kind words. I did not write yesterday's post, but
merely passed it on. It was the Red Rock Eater newsletter, and the
author was Phil Agre.
Phil Agre is a careful and reflective scholar. At a time when many
people are responding to a terrible event with powerful and dangerous
emotions, Agre is framing this in a larger context.
Many people feel a great need to gather information from good
sources. Agre responded by collecting a wide range of good links and
making them available. At a time when people seek news and a chance
to reflect, I passed on the responsible thoughts of a serious
scholar, and his collection of links from a wide variety of sources.
I had nothing to say or add.
The head of a school here in Sweden made the only statement that
truly voices my feeling.
She was asked, "How are you explaining this to your students?"
She answered, "Adults cannot understand this. How can we explain it
to children?"
