I don't know if this is official but in the NHS we used to keep them for 10
years and then destroy them!

I have been asked by HR who are going through the Data Protection Regs what
would be considered a reasonable time to keep non COSHH medical records,ie
pre employment, DSE etc. I have given them advice but would be glad hear
your views re this subject.
