Hello, CRUMB colleagues.
In spite of Sarah's recent warnings against using the list to promote
events, I'm posting this with the hope that an exception can be made.
The event listed below relies on your participation. It's a
discussion (starting online and culminating in a panel discusion)
that includes many of the topics brought up on this list: the
conservation, presentation, and interpretation of new media and
contemporary art in digital times; artists' relationship with
curators; the institutional evolution of the field of media arts,
etc. I hope that you will read the announcement below and
participate in the discussion.
Thanks!

** CALL FOR DISCUSSION**
GenArtSF and the Berkeley Art Museum/Paific Film Archive invite you to
participate in an online forum meant to expand (geographically,
temporally, and conceptually) upon the discussion to be had at our
upcoming panel discussion, at the BAM/PFA, entitled "New Media(tors):
The Social Life of Digital Art."
The panel and the list comprise a discussion among new media artists
about their role in society and the new economy and the effects of
network culture on the creation, interpretation, collection, and atured
speakers, online and at the Sept 24th panel, are artists Shawn Brixey,
Alex Galloway, Lynn Hershman, and Jason Lewis.

The open email discussion list went into action last week and leads into
the panel/event. Topics include...
How are new media artists interacting with art institutions or each
other in ways which are different/same from traditional media artists?
How is the education of artists adapting, if at all, in response to the
advent of "new media"? How are artists making a living working in media
which are hard to sell? How does valuation happen with perfectly
reproducible works, and what is the impact on collecting as a social and
economic function? How is such work being preserved (which has direct
implications for collecting, buying, and selling)? How are new media
artists engaged or part of an external industry in a way that filmmakers
might be, but painters are not?
To subscribe to the Mediators email discussion list, send an email
addressed to ([log in to unmask]) that contains this single
line in the body of the mail message: subscribe mediators .
