West Shropshire Mining Fields, Ivor Brown, pb 128 pp page 2 includes a
picture of a slim and very young version of yours truly so I am therefore
bias in promoting this book. There are over 200 photos of surface and
underground including a colour photo of the destroyed Halvens Engine House
at Snailbeach. Also included are a small number of the late Malcolm Newton's
drawings and Ivor offers a dedication. Photos have been provided by the
Shropshire Caving and Mining Club and the Shropshire Mines Trust.
Truth is it is well put together with some previously unpublished material
which includes Coal, Lead, Copper and Barytes. It is split into chapters
that include Snailbeach Mines, Snailbeach Railways, Tankerville, Ladywell,
The Bog, Llanymynech, Shrewsbury Coalfield, South West Shropshire Coalfield
including Hanwood and Pontsbury, North West Shropshire including Ifton
Colliery and Hawkstone Follies.
As ever Ivor produces very informative and well written text which is cross
referenced and can be also be used as a useful guide to this part of the
County
