Some of you may remember that some time ago I asked about the old
method of counting pit tubs, and several of you (including Richard
Smith) were kind enough to give me the count up to 20 from Yan to
Jiggit , starting out Yan, Tan, Tethera, Methera . . . .etc.
So there I was quietly reading a new science fiction novel "Ceres
Storm" by David Herter, Tor Books
when I came upon the following passage:
"Lamps floated at the end, lighting a small room of black rock, a
gray door and a yellow and black panel beside it.
Tak half dragged the wounded dendrii, tracking blood down the ramp.
"Down," Thalmas said. Red froth bubbled at its lips.
Tak laid the dendrii down. The thing looked pitifully up, yellow
eyes narrowing in pain.
The others scattered back, grunting, smacking their lips; a pole
clattered to the deck.
Thalmas knelt and made a gesture over the dendrii's eyes, and said
softly "Yan tan tethera."
The dendrii sank back onto the rock, gave a rattling groan. With his
thumb Thalmas closed its eyelids. "
Knowing the translation sort of detracts . . . .(thought you'd be
amused however)
