I recently had the pleasure of reading the following book, 'Lead Mining in
the Peak District' compiled by the PDMHS, edited by Ford & Rieuwerts
(revised version 1970). On page 56 of this book it describes the New
Engine Mine on the road from Housley to Bretton Edge. The book states that
the beam of the engine (Davy Bros of Sheffield) is, 'wedged part way down
the shaft'. Was the book correct about this? Is the beam still there?
Has it been rescued? I am 31 years out of date! Can anyone update me?
