Prenatal Diagnosis of Fetal Abnormality:
Consequences for Women who Terminate and Women who Continue
the Pregnancy
Seminar Synopsis: This seminar will present a summary of
the main findings of a longitudinal study of parents'
experiences of the diagnosis of an abnormality during
pregnancy or after birth, focusing on factors associated
with emotional well-being, co-ordination of professional
input and satisfaction with aspects of care.
Biographical Profile: Helen Statham began life as a
Zoologist and worked in muscular dystrophy research group
as a cell biologist. However by the time she left that job
Helen was more interested in what it felt like to be the
carrier of a genetic disease and to have to make decisions
about testing and termination. This developed into a
longer-term interest in many aspects of prenatal and
genetic testing and living with a genetic disorder.
