Midwifery and Women's Health Seminar Series
Monday, 12/3/01, 16.30 - 17.30
Beyond Individualised Care And Anti-Discriminatory
Practice:
Developing An 'Inequalities Imagination' In Midwifery
Students And Practitioners
Dr Angie Hart, Senior Lecturer & Ms Rachael Lockey,
Research Fellow,
Institute for Nursing and Midwifery Research,
University of Brighton.
Seminar Synopsis: This seminar draws on the findings
from a recently conducted empirical research project,
which was commissioned by the English National Board
for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. The study
explored current midwifery education, policy and
practice in England in relation to the needs of
disadvantaged clients and the role of the midwife in
meeting them. However, many of the findings have
considerable relevance to addressing inequalities in
health care provision more broadly, and it is the
relevance of our work to this broader perspective that
we consider in our session.
Biographical Profiles:
Dr Angie Hart. Angie has a background in medical
sociology and social anthropology with a specific
interest in issues of inequalities in health care
provision. She has set up and managed complex
research projects with large multi-disciplinary teams,
consistently working across the university-practice
divide. Her publications include work on prostitution
and sexual health, evaluations of maternity services
and mental health care provision to vulnerable
children.
Ms Rachael Lockey. Rachael is a practicing midwife
and part-time research fellow with a background in
social anthropology, and a long-standing interest in
women's health issues. She has undertaken empirical
research, with Angie Hart and other colleagues, on
inequalities in health care provision within the
maternity services. Recently she has taken on the
role of specialist midwife for women who are pregnant
and using drugs.
