Dear Postgraduate,
It is a great pleasure to announce that the next British Society for the
History of Science postgraduate workshop will be held in the august
surroundings of Magdalen College, University of Oxford on Tuesday 18th and
Wednesday 19th December 2001 (for details of the BSHS, see www.bshs.org.uk).
This meeting will provide a friendly and suitably informal forum for
postgraduates working in the history, philosophy or sociology of science,
technology or medicine in the UK and abroad. As with previous meetings in
London, Manchester, Cambridge, and Leeds, the Oxford Workshop will be an
excellent opportunity to give a presentation, discuss ongoing research and
interests, and make contacts and friends with other students in similar
fields.
Our aim is for postgraduates, usually isolated by our work, to
converge from a wide range of universities and sub-disciplines to informally
discuss our common interests. The structure of the workshop is quite
flexible, providing opportunities for a 5-minute 'precis' for Masters-level
or early PhD students, to a full 20-minute paper for those with research to
relate.
The programme will commence with a reception on the evening of Monday 17th
December in the magnificent surroundings of the Museum for the History of
Science, which has now reopened after extensive refurbishment and some
impressive excavations in the process. The Museum is located in the old
Ashmolean building in the very heart of the city, next to the Sheldonian
Theatre and the world famous Bodleian library. There are also plans for
trips to the University Museum of Natural History, scene of the legendary
(the term is used advisedly!) debate on Darwin’s evolution between Bishop
Wilberforce and Huxley in 1860, and the Pitt Rivers Museum.
The accommodation will be located in the famous Magdalen College,
overlooking the deer park and the river Cherwell. The workshop itself will
also be held at Magdalen College as will an evening of wining and dining set
for Tuesday 18th December. There will be a small conference fee (around £5)
for participants and accommodation (for the nights of the 17th, 18th and
19th) should not be more than £15 per night. If you are interested in
attending, please contact one of us either by e-mail or at the address given
above. (NOTE: Application forms are not yet available though will be posted
asap)
Yours sincerely,
On behalf of the Oxford Committee for the History of Science:
