DELIBERATIVE MAPPING: PILOTING AN INNOVATIVE PUBLIC CONSULTATION PROCESS
WITH THE CASE OF XENOTRANSPLANTATION AND ORGAN FAILURE

Department of Geography, University College London and Science and Policy
Research Unit, University of Sussex
The Department of Geography at University College London is seeking a
Research Officer to work on a Wellcome Trust funded project developing an
innovative method for public consultation on biotechnology and health
issues. This project combines experience at UCL on decision making through
deliberative and participatory processes with citizens
(http://www.geog.ucl.ac.uk/esruwww/ESRU.htm) and work at SPRU on
multi-criteria mapping to assess scientific understandings of risk
(http://www.sussex.ac.uk/spru/). The combined approach will be used to
elicit and explore criteria used to reach decisions about priorities for
the development of treatments for human organ failure. The successful
applicant will work closely with Professor Jacquie Burgess and Dr. Gail
Davies at UCL.

The vacancy is for a full time Research Officer for 22 months. The
successful candidate will have a Ph.D., and ideally postdoctoral
experience, in the fields of sociology or geography of health, UK health
policy or public understanding of science. Familiarity with methods of
working with lay publics and qualitative data analysis is desirable.
He/she will contribute to running a strand of in-depth qualitative research
with citizens in an inner London Borough, as well as providing support for
project administration. So good organisational and communications skill
will also be required.

The project runs from June 2001 to March 2003. This position is available
from July/August 2001 to the end of the project. Appointment will be made
on the Research salary scale: Salary stlg21,616 - stlg23,569 per annum (inclusive
of stlg2, 134 London Allowance), pro rata.

Further particulars are available from Professor Jacquie Burgess,
Department of Geography, University College London, 26 Bedford Way, London,
WC1H 0AP, 020 7679 5508, ([log in to unmask]) to whom applications
should be sent, including three copies of a full curriculum vitae and the
names and addresses of two referees. The closing date for receipt of
applications has been extended to 8th June 2001.
