Hi everyone,
I'm shortly to write a course on the issues of new media
for art and design students. Do members have any
suggestions for 'must-have' articles/texts?
Also, suggestions for useful visual material such as
documentaries?
The basic principle of the course is that new media such as
CGI in cinema/photography or interactive television (as
examples) often re-invigorate discussion of older issues of
the more established practices. For example, CGI might seem
to 're-affirm' the indexicality of chemical images, but
that only requires more in-depth understanding of
indexicality, and 'truths' in photography etc. (You get the
idea?)
Similarly, interactivity and television, issues of
computers and creativity (do they *really* offer much
more?) and so on.
Also, there's a critique of the 'next-big-thing' cycle,
such as the rise and fall of virtual reality etc.
I've got plenty on photography/cinema (Lister, Wombell
etc.), but I need some basic texts on:
computer gaming/virtual reality (esp. first-person-shooters)
television (esp. push-pull issues, according to a colleague)
Any help?
Much appreciated.
