MULTIMEDIA EXHIBIT DEVELOPER
The Natural History Museum, London (www.nhm.ac.uk), invites applications
from UK-based consultants with experience in developing multimedia.
Investigate at The Natural History Museum, London, part of The Clore
Education Centre opened successfully in April 2000. Investigate is a major
new educational initiative – a hands-on centre where children (7-14 years is
the target age group) and adults can interact with natural history objects
and investigate for themselves. Investigate features…
· interaction with natural objects (real hands-on)
· opportunities for scientific exploration
· integrated use of information technology
· differentiated access (both intellectual and physical)
The principal focus of Investigate is the exploration of natural objects
using the enquiry approaches that are characteristic of science.
We are now wishing to develop at least 6 multimedia exhibits for use in the
gallery, which can also readily be delivered via the Internet. From exhibit
briefs already developed by Museum staff, the exhibit developer will have
responsibility for authoring and maintaining current and new programmes
within Investigate. It will be a requirement for the successful person to
work one day a week at the Museum throughout the course of the project to
liaise with Museum staff and ensure that the project objectives are met
effectively.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
§ Develop a series of multimedia interactives for the Investigate gallery
that can be delivered via the Internet
§ To liaise with appropriate content and technical expertise both within the
Museum and with outside organizations
Qualifications:
It is expected that the successful consultant will have the following
qualifications and experience:
Essential:
· Degree or equivalent, in science or multimedia
§ Proficient in web-based new media, particularly HTML, Flash, and
Javascript
§ Image and text processing skills, particularly with Adobe PhotoShop and
Illustrator
§ Experience of turning educational objectives into educational activities
for 7-14 year olds and activities
Desirable:
§ Experience and familiarity with database applications such as MS Access
§ Experience of web-based delivery of database-driven content
§ Understanding of a constructivist philosophy of education
