Dataset Name: ST301302
Type of Dataset: Cross-sectional
Title: Households with selected consumer durables, 1972 to 1998-99: Social
Trends Dataset
Last Updated: 14/6/00
Description:
Lifestyles and leisure activities are not just influenced by the amount of
time people spend working, but also by the availability of, and access to,
consumer durables. Domestic appliances have multiplied in our homes, even
over the last quarter of a century. In 1972 only 66 per cent of households
in Great Britain had a washing machine, but by 1998-99 this had risen to 92
per cent. There has been an even more dramatic rise in the proportion of
households with dishwashers in the last two decades from 3 per cent in 1978
to 24 per cent in 1998-99. Technological advances may also provide people
with new types of leisure activities. More than four in five households in
Great Britain now have a video recorder compared with just under one in five
households in 1983, so many people can now watch pre-recorded or
self-recorded videos at home. There has also been a dramatic increase in the
ownership of home computers. The proportion of households with a home
computer almost doubled between 1988 and 1998-99, from 18 per cent to 34 per
cent. Of course, certain types of household are more likely than others to
have a home computer. In 1998-99, 49 per cent of households with children
had a computer, compared with 28 per cent of one person households aged 16
to 59, and just 4 per cent of those aged 60 and over.
