Subject: 16 million Britons now online - Ananova Alerting
Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 12:17:01 GMT
A new survey reveals that around 16 million Britons have internet access.
Which?Online's Net Result report says 36% of the population are now online.
But the survey says the UK isn't a nation of net addicts - around
two-thirds of people surf for under five hours a week.
The Which? team also found the public remains cautious about e-mail,
despite analysts' view that it's the web's "killer application".
Only 5% of surfers chose e-mail as their preferred means of communication -
down from 14% two years ago.
Seven out of 10 respondents said there should be more regulation to target
cyber fraudsters and around half said the web could undermine moral standards.
But there is evidence of enthusiasm for high-speed internet access and a
steady increase in the number of people willing to shop on the net.
Which?Online head Paul Kitchen says the report shows the internet is
becoming an integral part of everyday life.
He adds:"What was once extraordinary is well on the way to becoming ordinary."
