I am delighted to tell you that the National Library of Scotland has
concluded an Agreement with Hays DX for the provision of a Scottish
Libraries' Transport Service (SLTS). Over the past week, those which
had already expressed interest in using the Service have been sent
appropriate "paperwork" so that they can be included in the first 'wave'
of Scottish libraries to use SLTS.
As well as carrying inter-library loan traffic, SLTS will also carry
consolidated mail, provided the addressee is another library. Delivery
is largely confined to the UK mainland as it has not been possible to
cover remoter areas such as Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles.
It is intended to commence SLTS on 14 January 2002.
Although a long desired objective, this is the first time that Scotland
has been able to have a transport arrangement for its libraries as the
pattern followed by the English regional transport schemes was not
considered viable.
