The Aslib Engineering Group invites you to a talk to be given by Prof John
Burland, Professor of Soil Mechanics at Imperial College of Science,
Technology and Medicine. This will reveal how Prof Burland tackled one of
the most famous challenges in architecture, how to save the Leaning Tower
of Pisa.
This promises to be a fascinating talk with Prof Burland's insight into how
he has restored the tower towards stability which it has not known for 300
years. The lecture will be followed by an opportunity to have a glass of
wine and network with colleagues.
Professor Burland is a Member of the Italian Prime Minister's Commission
for Stabilising the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He has also worked on the
Jubilee Line Extension, Big Ben clock tower and the Houses of Parliament.
The talk will be held on Wednesday, 14th November 2001 at 4.00pm in the
Lecture Theatre, room 2.08, Civil Engineering Building at Imperial College,
University of London.
Cost: £5.00 Aslib Engineering Group Members & Staff and Students of the
University of London.
£10.00 Non Members.
