Need an understanding of how the Dewey scheme works? Then why not attend:
Dewey and how it works
8 November, Aston University, Birmingham
The Dewey Decimal Classification is the most widely used general
classification scheme. Although the notation is easy to understand the
scheme is continuously developing and becoming more complex in structure.
This Library Association workshop looks at the basic principles of the
Classification - discipline, hierarchy and synthesis - and explains how
Dewey numbers are put together. During the day explanations will be
interspersed with opportunities for practical work so that by the end of the
workshop participants will have gained a working knowledge of Dewey.
How will this event help you?
Anybody who works in a library that uses Dewey needs to understand the
principles of the Classification, even if they do not have to create or
modify Dewey numbers themselves. After attending this workshop you will
have a full understanding of how the scheme works, which will help you
advise readers and users of your collections. It will also help those who
need to revise Dewey numbers obtained from elsewhere to meet local
requirements.
Who will benefit from attending?
You will find this workshop ideal if you are starting to use Dewey or if you
want to know how the Dewey numbers your library obtains from elsewhere are
created. Those with some knowledge of Dewey will find this workshop
increases their understanding of its structure and application.
