Building the New Library Network
The LIC New Library: the People's network in 1997, setting out a strategy
for a radical transformation in the character and importance of our public
libraries. Government responded by asking the Commission to produce firm
proposals to translate its vision into reality.
It is divided into three sections, containing details and costed
implementation proposals for each of the three strands of the programme:
Network
Proposes a new library network, initially based on the internet but which
is capable of developing into a dedicated broadband network if required.
Content
Puts forward framework for defining, creating and managing the resources
available on the network. libraries will offer access to educational and
cultural material and take on an important new role as creators and
developers of new digital content.
Training
Sets out a rapid reaction programme to equip the nation's librarians with
new skills to handle information and communications technology, access
databases and online information, and take on new roles as guides and
instructors.
