> JANUARY 2001 BRIEFING FROM THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING (ILT)
> * The ILT has more than doubled in size since August 2000. As of 4
> January 2001, it has received almost 4300 applications for membership, of
> which over 3500 have to date been accepted into membership.
> * As part of its commitment to involving its members, the ILT has now
> reached the next stage in its move towards a Council with a majority of
> elected members with its first elections to Council. The successful
> candidates are: Professor Graham Gibbs, Ms Diane Marks-Maran, Professor
> Phil Race, Professor Sir David Watson and Dr Lorraine Stefani.
> Twenty-seven ILT members stood for the election for the five places on
> Council. The turnout was 42% of the electorate.
> * Graham Gibbs was formerly Head of the Oxford Centre for Staff
> Development at Oxford Brookes University, and is now a Professor in the
> Centre for Higher Education Practice at the Open University. He is an
> educational developer of international standing. Diane Marks-Maran heads
> the the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the Wolfson Institute for
> Health Sciences, which she established in 1996. She is a member of the
> ILT's Membership Committee and was nominated for a National Teaching
> Fellowship. Phil Race is an independent consultant and author of a number
> of influential books on teaching and learning and study skills. Sir David
> Watson has been Director of the University of Brighton since 1990, and has
> been a member of the CNAA, the PCFC, the HEFCE and the Dearing Committee.
> Lorraine Stefani is a Reader in the Centre for Academic Practice at the
> University of Strathclyde, co-leader of a project on disability issues and
> a key member of the SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association)
> Scotland Network.
> * A number of the remaining nominees who were not elected to Council
> in this round are being invited to participate in ILT committees and
> working parties, where their willingness to serve the organisation with a
> mandate from its members will be invaluable.
> * In response to demand, the ILT is to launch a new category of
> membership early in 2001: Associateship. This category is designed for
> staff who wish to join the ILT but whose experience and expertise do not
> cover all the required criteria for Membership. The criteria and the
> evaluation process will be similar to those for Membership. However,
> applicants will be required to demonstrate their experience in only two
> out of the first four areas of activity required for Membership, together
> with the processes of reflective practice and personal development. Staff
> applying for Associateship by the Individual Entry Route will need to have
> the equivalent of one year's experience in teaching or learning support.
> All staff engaged in teaching or learning support at all levels of
> seniority, including postgraduate students with teaching responsibilities,
> will be encouraged to apply for Associateship if it is appropriate to
> their personal and professional experience and needs.
> * The ILT has issued a consultation paper to seek the views of its
> members and other interested bodies on Continuing Professional
> Development. It is about to undertake a pilot project on CPD involving a
> range of staff and institutions. The success of any approach to CPD needs
> the active understanding and co-operation of the HE sector, so the ILT
> welcomes comments and feedback from its members, HE institutions,
> professional bodies and other related organisations.
