Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Geography & Director of GIS Unit

The appointee will be responsible for teaching and developing courses in GIS and remote sensing. Support of postgraduate, distance education and interdisciplinary outreach may be required. As Director of the GIS Unit, the appointee will be responsible for the ongoing management of the GIS facilities of the Geography Department, development of future GIS directions of the Unit and fostering of GIS development in the Region through the education and research activities of the GIS Unit.
Applicants must have a primary degree in Geography and must have a good postgraduate degree in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or in Geography with specialisation in GIS. If the degree is not in GIS, clear evidence of proficiency in GIS and application of the range of its geographical applications at a high level must be demonstrated. Applicants must have technical and managerial experience in GIS, Remote Sensing (RS) and related mapping sciences with an understanding of the latest advances in these areas. This must include practical experience with some of the more common software environments used in GIS, RS and related activities. Applicants must have tertiary teaching experience in GIS/RS and have demonstrated experience in initiating and maintaining interdisciplinary projects, both within academic institutions and with outside agencies. For appointment at the Senior Lecturer level, applicants must be able to demonstrate significant management and academic experience in GIS.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in developing and implementing new GIS projects in a variety of disciplines; experience in closely related areas, such as cartography; experience in developing countries (preferably in the Pacific Islands); demonstrated leadership (or at least clear potential for leadership); the ability to deal effectively with cultural diversity; and the ability to teach and interact with young people and professionals in the field.

The position is available for a period of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Salary range: Senior Lecturer F$48 489 to F$55 948 per annum Lecturer F$35 434 to F$46 623 per annum (inclusive of 15% gratuity)
In addition to the above benefits, the University contributes 10% of salary to an approved superannuation scheme, provides airfare and relocation costs where appropriate and substantially subsidises housing for eligible candidates.
