The School of Conservation Sciences, Bournemouth University, UK welcomes
applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following post
within the University Research Centre in Archaeology
GIS Research Assistant - EARLY HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH CHANNEL PROJECT
This is a one year fixed term appointment in the first instance
£11086 - £15349 per annum
The aim of the Project is to examine the human and social impact of the
formation and subsequent evolution of the English Channel with reference
to the use and exploitation of all environments in, on, under, and
around it. This piece of work involves the detailed examination of a
representative study area and the development of perspectives and
methodologies for more extensive application in due course. The work is
being carried out in a number of stages:
1. Development of a general GIS-based terrain model for the
English Channel and its immediate borderlands, with a more
detailed model for the Study Area;
2. Zonation of the Study Area into topo-environmental blocks
with differing archaeological potential and constraints;
3. Creation of a multi-media database of archaeological events
and discoveries in the Study Area, linked to the GIS model;
4. Checking and validation of database;
5. Generation of period-specific summary maps of recorded
archaeology in relation to the changing developing Channel,
10,000 BC to AD 1500.
The current focus of interest is stages 3-5. The general model of the
English Channel will include the English and French coasts between
approximately 1°30' east and 2° west. The proposed detailed Study Area
is the southern English Coast between the Hamble River in the east and
the River Exe in Lyme Bay to the west. It is expected that the results
from the early stages of the Project will lead to publications (authored
jointly by the post-holder and other members of the Project Steering
Group) and the submission of proposals for additional research funding.
The successful candidate will hold a degree in archaeology, have
extensive knowledge of GIS (ARCHINFO) and database construction,
research experience, and an understanding of coastal archaeology. The
following are highly desirable:
* a PhD in archaeology or a closely related discipline relevant
to the project,
* a professional qualification in archaeology,
* an understanding of coastal geomorphology,
* a willingness to travel,
* knowledge of possible data sources
* experience at obtaining and making compatible data
from a range of sources,
* and an ability to prepare reports, papers for
publication, and grant applications.
The work will be supervised on a day to day basis by Professor Timothy
Darvill, with support from a Project steering group comprising academic
staff from Bournemouth University and Southampton University.
This is a one year fixed term appointment in the first instance.
