We are presently considering to purchase a few new polarizing microscopes for teaching. As this is quite an expense, it may be worthwhile to ask around whether any departments have bought microscopes in recent years, and what their experience is.
Any comments on mechanical and optical performance (in relation to price)? Student microscopes need to withstand quite a bit of abuse over the years (no matter how much we try to avoid this), and durability is thus important also.
I am not sure whether you can get into trouble by badmouthing any particular brand using a mailing list, but you can always send an e-mail message to me directly.
I'd be most thankful for any comment and recommendations.
