POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN APPLIED GEOCHRONOLOGY
The Geochronology section of the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa,
Canada, is seeking a 2-year postdoctoral fellow (NSERC Visiting Fellowship),
commencing in spring, 2001, to join a multidisciplinary team investigating
the Committee Bay greenstone belt (CBGB), Western Churchill Province,
Nunavut, Canada. The primary objectives of the project are to provide
1:100,000 scale geologic maps and to unravel the structural, stratigraphic,
and tectonothermal history of this Archean granite-greenstone terrane. In
addition to a potentially complex and as yet poorly understood Archean
history, the occurrence of the CBGB within the upper plate, hinterland of
two Paleoproterozic orogens provides a unique opportunity to investigate
processes involved in reworking of continental crust in orogenic plateau
settings.
The PDF will be charged with establishing the timing of metamorphic events
and cooling history of the CBGB and environs utilizing U/Pb (TIMS and
in-situ SHRIMP II) and Ar/Ar (CO2 laser) geochronology. The incumbent will
be encouraged to develop his/her academic interests, and to make full use of
the many resources available within the GSC. Candidates are sought with
expertise in U-Pb laboratory procedures who have experience in solving
complex field-based problems in metamorphic terrains. The incumbent will be
expected to participate in a helicopter-supported field program.
For further information contact Dr. Richard Stern, Geological Survey of
Canada at [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> (613-992-7589).
Interested candidates should send a letter or interest and supporting
documents by April 15, 2001.
