Re: NERC-funded PhD Transfer
I write because I need to reach a decision on my research future in the UK
by the end of this week. I apologise for putting you under pressure.
As you know, I wish my PhD to test Tim Bell's theory of orthogonality and
non-rotation of porphyroblasts: I believe some of his ideas have merit and
are worth investigating. To recap, I will be taking a multi-disciplined
approach:
1. Orthogonality -
(a) Test porphyroblast inclusion trails do record orthogonal events:
- structural (incl. stress analysis and cleavage development)
- geochemical (cleavage differentiation)
- dating (in-situ method)
- geothermobarometry (if applicable)
(b) Evaluate competing theories of generation of orthogonality
2. Rotation - deformation partitioning; porphyroblast (by species) rotation
-v- non-rotation during fold development; and ultimately the applicability
of foliation-intersection axes (FIAs) in reconstructing plate movements.
This should generate three or more discrete papers and one all-encompassing
one.
I have indicated to all that my preference of field area is Northern
Queensland, Australia but that I am willing to consider another field area
if it meets the following criteria:
1. structural and metamorphic suitability (contact me if in any doubt)
2. local weather sufficient dry to guarantee field seasons
NERC have granted 3.9 years in which to finish my PhD following resumption
at a new UK college (thank you Liverpool), which should put your mind at
rest regarding penalities. However, I aim to finish all practical work in
2.3-2.6 years and therefore this excludes the UK and Ireland as suitable
field areas.
I need to be in the field with a supervisor (initially) one month after
resumption of my studies to be on course, therefore you should calculate my
start date no earlier than one month from the time I can be accompanied in
the field. A ballpark start date would be helpful, but NERC have said it
must be no later than 1 October 2001.
Please contact me if you need more information or want to discuss
alternative field areas (access to my email is intermittent at present, so
telephone if urgent). However, if I do not hear from you by Friday this
week (2 February), I shall look elsewhere.

PS. Any college interested in supervising this PhD that I have not
contacted, feel free to enquire. UK universities need to already receive
NERC-funded students. Unfortunately funding is not transferable to overseas
colleges, but if any non-UK colleges are interested, do contact me.
