Notice of meeting and call for abstracts

The next RIP and AGM will be held in the Division of Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow on Wednesday 21st March 2001. Abstracts should be sent to MSG Secretary Simon Cuthbert (contact details below), preferably as a Word attachment to an e-mail or as hard copy of A4 size. There are no hard and fast rules for format, but the names, affiliations and e-mail addresses of all authors should be included under the title, and any references should be cited in full at the end of the text. Size should normally be no more than two sides of A4, although larger abstracts are acceptable if diagrams or photographs are included (please try to keep file sizes to a minimum to avoid e-mailing problems). 

Deadline for abstracts is Friday 16th February. 

Please note that this date is later than that advertised in the Mineralogical Society December 2000 Bulletin.

Undergraduate Metamorphic Geology Project Competition:

To promote and reward interest in Metamorphic Geology among undergraduate students, the Metamorphic Studies Group (MSG) will be offering a prize for high quality in undergraduate metamorphic project work. The work may be done by individuals or groups.

Course leaders in Metamorphic Geology from universities in Great Britain and Eire are invited to encourage students to present their project work at the RIP/AGM in March 2001. The presentations will be assessed by a panel of judges from the MSG and the winner, or winning group, will be awarded a certificate of merit and a cash prize (£100 for an individual winner or £150 for a winning group). Full competition rules and details of how to enter are attached to this message and pasted in below. A poster for publicity is also attached - please display it in your Department. Paper copies of the poster and rules can be provided on request.

The deadline for entries is Friday 16th February 2001.

Competition Rules :-

1. Projects must in the broad subject area of Metamorphic Geology.
2. Competitors may be individuals or groups of students in their final year of an undergraduate degree programme in the current academic year. The project work may be a contribution to assessment of a degree programme, or may be prepared especially for the competition.
3. The judges will be the members of the MSG Committee, plus anyone co-opted by them to assist in the judging.
4. Entrants should present a summary of their work of no size larger than three sides of A4 paper to the Secretary of the Metamorphic Studies Group. The summaries should be signed by a lecturer as confirmation that the project work is deemed suitable for entry to the competition. In the event of a large number of entries the MSG Committee will draw up a shortlist of five projects eligible to participate in the competition on the basis of an assessment of the summaries.
5. Entrants selected to compete will make a public, oral, illustrated presentation of no more than 10 minutes at the March RIP meeting of the MSG. The oral presentation may be supported by a poster or other public display media (e.g. a web page). The judges' assessment will be based entirely upon this presentation. Judging will take into consideration the content of the project and the quality of the presentation.
6. The MSG is not able to provide financial support for preparation of projects or attendance at the RIP meeting. Participating Departments are encouraged to provide support for competitors.
7. The decision of the judges in the selection of competitors and award of the prize will be final.
