'Quantifying fault zone evolution and basement reactivation in passive
margins'

A structural geologist or geophysicist is needed to construct 3D digital fault
maps from onshore and offshore fault zones in the NE Atlantic passive margin
with an aim to develop methods of detecting and quantifying the role of
continental basement faults in the location and architecture of offshore
basins. The successful applicant will have a PhD in structural geology or
geophysics.

The structural architecture of passive margins is an identified priority in
the joint NERC- and industry-funded OCEAN MARGINS (LINK) thematic programme.
As part of this initiative the Reactivation Research Group (web page -
www.dur.ac.uk/react.res) based at the University of Durham will rigorously
test the widely held assumption that basement fault zone reactivation controls
offshore basin formation and development. The project aim will be to develop
and apply a series of software-based tools that will analyse digital fault
data to detect remotely and quantify the degree of basement fault activity
during the formation of offshore basins. This research will be carried out in
collaboration with Dr Richard England (Leicester), Rock Deformation Research
(Prof. R. Knipe, Leeds) and Cognit A/S (Dr Richard Jones) with industry
support from BP and Statoil UK.

The PDRA will work closely with Dr Bob Holdsworth, Dr Ken McCaffrey and a PhD
student to develop the methodology to produce and analyse the 3-D digital
fault maps and to apply the technique to identified basins and associated
faults in Scotland, Norway and western Ireland. He or she will apply the
latest GPS/Laser ranging equipment to map fault attributes in basement rocks
onshore. For offshore basins, the PDRA will create fault maps from 2- and 3-D
seismic data and gravity/bathymetry data using seismic interpretation
workstations which will require spending a period of time working ‘inhouse’ at
the industry partner offices. He or she will integrate onshore and offshore
data in a GIS-based fault database, produce 3-D visualisation using gOcad™ and
take part in the development and testing of spatial analysis software.

Starting salary on the scale £17,278 to £25,969 per annum. The post is
available for three years in the first instance.
