'The Courtesan as an Ethical Problem'
Abstract
The paper seeks to understand the prominence of the courtesan as a theme of
both excitement and derision in the ethical and moralistic literature of
courtly elites from early medieval times in India. The paper will attempt to
understand how the conceptions of, and anxieties around, courtship in
general and the courtesan in particular connect with other exigencies which
faced the medieval elite.
