The Learning Unit in the Science Museum concentrates on developing and
delivering a range of educational services, activities and events designed
to maximise learning opportunities for the Museum's audiences.

Community Liaison Manager - 3 year post
c.£25,000

We are establishing a new team to develop our knowledge of audiences, to
work closely with groups and communities to further our understanding of
the barriers to visiting. In this role you will take particular
responsibility for researching and building relationships with particular
audiences and groups, producing 'tailor-made' programmes jointly with them
to overcome the barriers and encourage new educational visitors.

Able to initiate, innovate and drive projects through to completion, you
are committed to developing new audiences and can demonstrate a good
understanding of the needs of different audiences and the types of learning
appropriate to them. Educated to degree level and familiar with the
National Curriculum, you will ideally have some teaching experience and
will be good at working with children. An excellent communicator and
sensitive to the needs of others, you will also work closely with community
groups, families and special educational needs groups. Your role will
include travel abroad and within the UK, early morning, evening and weekend
work - therefore a degree of flexibility is essential. Working as part of a
team, this extremely diverse role requires an excellent networker with
first-class interpersonal and organisational skills - ideal for an
individual committed to bringing education into the community. Job share
for this position will be considered.

Special Needs Co-ordinator - Part-time (0.5)
c.£16,500 pro rata

In this role you will work specifically to forge links and partnerships
with community groups, charities and schools that work with SEN/disabled
groups, encouraging them to maximise their use of the museum. This will
involve organising welcome days and special events for
students with a diverse range of physical, sensory and intellectual needs,
and taking Outreach events to SEN schools and organisations.

An excellent knowledge of issues relating to special educational needs and
disabilities, and the Disability Discrimination Act, are essential to this
role. A good communicator with advanced interpersonal skills, you will
advise museum colleagues on how to meet the needs of audiences with
disabilities, and answer queries from teachers and other visitors about how
to plan their visit. Teaching or community work experience would be
advantageous, as would a relevant degree in science, technology or
education, and a knowledge of the national curriculum. Open to new ideas
and systems, you will show a strong commitment to developing new and
exciting projects to enhance our audience development initiative.

Shows & Outreach Manager
c.£23,000

In this role you will be responsible for the Science Museum's 'Outreach'
programme, an essential tool for reaching new audiences, creating
strategies for long-term development. Also in control of the science shows
programme, you will create a long-term strategy for show development, and
make sure that shows are delivered in line with them, and presented to a
high standard.

Aware of current educational thinking, you will ensure that outside
audiences (teachers, families, children) are consulted during the
development and evaluation process of shows, managing small intimate events
through to large, high-profile Outreach events. Ideally you will have
experience of managing budgets, staff and projects, and teaching or museum
education knowledge would be advantageous. With proven experience in
show/public performance management and delivery, you come from a strong
science background and are keen to increase access to the museum through a
commitment to producing thought-provoking and educationally relevant work.

Project Manager - Science Year Curriculum Review
£20,000 pro rata
Temporary post for 8 months - Oct 2001 to May 2002

As a particular initiative for Science Year, the Science Museum is
organising a national consultation process for students aged 16-19. They
will be invited to express their views on the Science National Curriculum
and make positive recommendations for development of the
science curriculum in schools. It will be your responsibility to manage and
deliver the consultation process, organise the national events, and produce
a written summary of the recommendations for printed media and web.

Committed to ensuring the process is student-led, you will establish an
effective rapport with post-16 students, and be creative in generating
ideas. An excellent communicator - orally, in writing and by electronic
means - you are IT and internet literate, and can work equally well as part
of a team or independently. The consultations will be conducted through a
series of regional focus groups/forums and on the internet, therefore you
must be willing to travel throughout England to support the development and
delivery of these events. With a background in science or education,
familiarity with the Science National Curriculum
and experience of organising events - this is a great opportunity to
combine your knowledge and talents in one high-profile project.

Please email your CV and covering letter to: [log in to unmask] or write,
to: Allison Bright, Personnel Department, Science Museum, Exhibition Road,
London SW7 2DD by 19th September 2001. If you have not heard by 28th
September 2001 you should assume that you have not been successful on this
occasion.
