JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
  To lead in the development of the better understanding, use of, and support for the historic environment in education with particular responsibility for those in a specific region, by producing teaching materials, and delivery of courses and workshops.
  To contribute to the formulation and development of overall English Heritage Education policy and its implementation as a member of the Education Team, maintaining its position as a leader in the field of heritage education.

Dimensions
                (a)     Supervision of specialist consultants, authors and designers, including monitoring contract compliance and performance;
(b)     Responsibility for project budgets of ,20k per annum;
                (c)     Responsibility for all education projects within designated      region, and for other, nationally-based, projects as specified;
                (d)     Responsibility for developing and maintaining the authority of 
        the organisation in relation to education.

Accountabilities

                1.      To research, initiate, develop, prioritise and implement a strategy for the specific region to raise the level of understanding within formal education of the potential of the historic environment in relation to promoting the understanding of the past, principally through its material remains.

                2.      To carry out the education strategy in a specific region in outreach work as formulated by the Head of Education.
                3.      To lead the education strategy in a specific region in respect of provision of the following areas: courses for teachers, educational workshops, site-specific publications, project evaluation.

                4.      To represent English Heritage at regional, national and international level in all matters related to education and the historic environment, developing and maintaining liaison with appropriate bodies, eg Local Education Authorities, Qualifications and Curriculum Authority etc.

                5.      To identify the need for, and subsequently commission, manage, edit and produce educational publications, audio-visual or multi-media materials from conception to finished product.

                6.      To identify and promote opportunities to develop education visits to and educational activities at our historic sites in a specific region.

                7.      To identify and promote opportunities to develop education activities at any site, building or landscape which is part of a         specific region=s conservation concern or interest.

                8.      To identify the need for, design, manage and run courses for teachers, adult education groups and societies, and, where appropriate, to commission course tutors.

                9.      To research and assess the long-term educational potential of both sites and major conservation projects and to devise and implement appropriate strategies to maximise this potential.

                10.     To commission and manage consultants and teachers employed by English Heritage.

                11.     To work with individual educational establishments in order to develop projects that deliver national education strategy.

                12.     To monitor and evaluate the delivery of national education strategy within a specific region, where appropriate commissioning and managing research, assessment and evaluation by external bodies.

                13.     To work as part of the whole Education Team, or in sub teams, for particular projects across or in other regions, eg national teachers= courses or >Schools Adopt Monuments= scheme.

                14.     To provide the educational expertise for a specific region in site and regional planning, (eg regional action plans) development and management.

                15.     To manage budgets for educational activities formally held at a more senior level.

                16.     To contribute to the development and introduction of innovative approaches to English Heritage Education. The postholder will be required to develop expertise in a particular area, to brief colleagues on a regular basis and to contribute to educational activities/projects where those skills are of specific relevance, including those in other regions, eg environmental education, interactive WEB sites, community outreach projects etc.

Nature and scope of the post

                1.      Reporting relationships: The postholder reports to the Regional Director and as such will be a member of the regional team; the postholder will also be a member of the national Education Team led by the Head of Education, who is responsible for setting and monitoring national education strategies carried out at regional level.

                2.      Nature of contribution: The postholder will have both regional, national and corporate responsibilities and will be expected to ensure that educational objectives are met on a local, regional and national level.

                3.      Working practice: The postholder will be responsible for developing and implementing education strategies in relation to site, regional and national objectives. The postholder must have significant specialist knowledge, expertise and experience. Responsibilities will be roughly split between 70% Regional work and 30% National work.

                4.      Management and organisation: The postholder will be expected to marshal resources, manage work loads and co-ordinate activity to ensure that regional and corporate objectives are met.

                5.      Challenge: To develop innovative approaches to education in English Heritage and to maximise the understanding of the work of English Heritage within educational institutions and communities.

                6.      Knowledge and experience: The postholder must have significant experience of developing and implementing education projects which relate to the historic environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.  Educated to degree level, with a teaching qualification, the postholder will have previous experience in both schools and in a museum/heritage organisation.

OTHER INFORMATION

SALARY:
Pay Band 2, c.£23,000pa

HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT
You will receive 28 days holiday per year of which three days are to be taken over the Christmas period when the offices are closed. Management each year will confirm these specific days. In addition there are 8 public holidays.

BENEFITS
You will receive a monument pass, which will allow you and your family to have free entry to all monuments in the care of English Heritage. You may be able to purchase your annual travel card and have the payments deducted without interest ever one year.

The selection board will select the candidate most suitable for appointment.  Their decision will be final.
