Here at EH we have already started exploring some of the issues which Neil
raises, in particular relating to the use of images/icons to assist users in
the retrieval of information: we have developed a public search engine
(PastScape) that will be launched internally later in summer and are also
hoping to use iconographic search mechanisms in the illustrated thesaurus,
HITITE. Images abstract over complex data very well, and can provide a very
intuitive addition to text-only facilities. The idea of starting to develop
a common language (or standards) of icons and images for data capture and
retrieval, is intriguing and definitely worth opening a dialogue on.

Dear Ed,
Since Government want us to do everything electronically, we need some
investigation of planning portals, standardised planning information logging
and retieval systems, real-time info collection systems, and standardised
historic building data capture systems (to include images / photographs).
We need to start thinking about iconic data capture / recording systems too
(a picture tells a thousand words!).
Cheers,
Neil
