There are cases where the "building" is both a SM and a LB, sometimes parts of the same Monument eg the occupied sections of Usk Castle are Listed the unoccupied are schuled, sometimes all the Monument.
Thank you

In terms of Protection Grade / Status
there is a possible mis-understanding on how we use some of our terms in the
list and certainly
in some nomenclature
for instance
Register of Ancient Woodlands ..... suggests a register of ancient ancient
woodlands (which should be classed as a source) not a registered ancient
woodland .....
or even Certificate of Immunity from Listing
or even Organic Farming Scheme
In a purist view these are not necessarily designations or status. As the
years have passed we have placed all manner of items in the lists that maybe
should reside in other lists or be termed differently.
its probably a minor issue in the great scheme of things but it is actually
worth pointing out during this process that in a strictly purist view we may
have some issues in terms of how we use the terminology in our lists. It is
likely that we can resolve this with changing the nomenclature of the terms
slightly
i.e
Register of Ancient Woodlands to registered ancient woodland
on a related topic it is possible that we need to think about a broader
approach identifying where a monument is legally protected under Historic
Environment Law and any that are protected under local or carry no legal
status at all ..
Obviously we must know the specifics ...
i.e
what monument is a scheduled monument or what is a listed building (i'm
forever asked what is listed and what is scheduled)
but it would be useful to consider there may be some benefits for this broad
approach
as we could actually group terms such as
Scheduled Monument / Scheduled Ancient Monument
Listed Building
etc
under say legally protected
This would either require a hieachical structure to our terminology (which
is already evident in the Monument Status Lookup for Exegesis) or an extra
field that resides next to the term.
What do you think?
Cheers
Jason
