>What is the origin of the description, 'blonde bombshell' to describe a
>star?
In 1931 Jean Harlow made a movie called `Platinum Blonde’ in `33 she
solidified her persona in `Bombshell’, released in the UK the same year as
‘Blonde Bombshell’ in between she made 8 other movies, including `Red Headed
Woman’ in `32. That should answer your question about the origin. But it
should also be said that Harlow was a sexy, smart woman, someone who used
her sexuality to get what she wanted from the men who thought they were
exploiting her, she always won in the end dropping a `bomb’ on the men who
didn’t see it coming. Unlike, say Marilyn, who was a `sex kitten’.
>Can brunettes be bombshells?
Harlow played it in all colors… Hepburn could be called a `bombshell’,
but you wouldn’t want to say it to her face unless you wanted a good
lashing.
>War entertainment of the troops or is it post-atomic?
Betty Grable, the original `pin up’ girl was also called a blonde bombshell,
and that definitely had the military slant, but the origins are with the
tough talking sexy flapper.
