CALL FOR PAPERS

The International Journal of Politics and Ethics seeks submissions for a
special issue on "Debating Environmental Regimes: Looking Forward, Looking
Back."  The special issue is scheduled for publication in December 2001

In 1992, more than 130 heads of state and hundreds of NGOs participated in
the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Popularly known as the "Earth Summit," UNCED
was convened to address urgent problems of environmental protection and
socio-economic development.  The Earth Summit spawned a global debate
around issues of environmental regimes, understood as those sets of rules,
norms, institutions and procedures around which the expectations of actors
converge on matters of environmental protection. However, the arguments and
aims of environmental regimes remain essentially contested.

Now is an opportune time to explore the environmental regimes debate, as
preparation continues for the "Rio+10 Conference" to be held in South
Africa in June 2002.  The International Journal of Politics and Ethics
invites manuscript submissions that rigorously examine the fundamental
issues and questions surrounding environmental regimes, as we look back to
the Earth Summit and forward to Rio+10 and beyond.

Manuscripts should explore the ethical and political aspects of
environmental regimes.  Papers that address the following themes in a
critical and constructive manner are particularly encouraged:

* Comparative or historical perspectives on environmental regimes
* Assessment of past, present, and proposed environmental regimes
* Issues of environmental justice and/or racism
* Environmental security
* Governance
* The interaction between or contributions of various state and non-state
actors
* Compliance with existing environmental agreements/protocols
* Sustainable development

We would be very pleased to receive papers from policy makers and those
working in nongovernmental organizations as well as from scholars.
Submissions will also be considered for possible publication in an edited
book.  The deadline for submission of manuscripts is August 1, 2001.
