Two Graduate Student Opportunities

Behavior and physiology of adult male and female grey seals

A student is sought for a Master's research program in the Department of
Biology at the University of Waterloo focusing on the diving ecology of
seals. The specific project involves studying the behavior and
physiology
of adult grey seals during the pupping and breeding season in Eastern
Canada. Behavior will be monitored through standard observational
techniques (e.g. scan, focal sampling) and with time-depth-velocity
recorders. Physiological status will be monitored in real-time with
archival heart-rate recorders and ECG monitors and longitudinally with
standard blood and muscle sampling techniques. The position will begin
September 2001 with field work starting in January 2002. The project is
supported by the University of Waterloo, the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Department of Fisheries
and
Oceans. The student will be supervised by Dr. Jason F. Schreer.
Applications including a CV, transcripts, and a cover letter outlining
qualifications should be sent to

Analysis of diving behavior and physiology of seals

A student is sought for a Master's research program in the Department of
Biology at the University of Waterloo focusing on the diving ecology of
seals. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics and/or
statistics, strong computer skills with some programming ability, as
well
as a general understanding of biological processes. The specific
project
involves developing quantitative procedures for analyzing various types
of
time-series data. There will be several opportunities to conduct field
work on harbor, harp, hooded, and grey seals. However, the thesis
itself
will focus on the analysis of previously collected depth and heart rate
data. The project is supported by the Department of Biology and the
Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at University of Waterloo
and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
The
position will begin September 2001. The student will be co-supervised
by
Dr. Jason F. Schreer (Department of Biology) and Dr. Jeanette O'Hara
Hines
(Department of Statistic and Actuarial Science). Applications including
a
CV, transcripts, and a cover letter outlining qualifications should be
