THE JOURNAL OF DESIGN RESEARCH
Design Research Community has a new publication platform at her
disposal: The Journal of Design Research. An electronic site
(http://jdr.tudelft.nl) where refereed papers are placed
throughout the year. It is currently free of charge accessible
to anyone and submissions are invited.
Interdisciplinary research & human aspects
By focussing on interdisciplinary research, it aims to present
the common ground that design researchers of various disciplines
have. In this, it emphasizes human aspects as a central issue
through integrative studies of social sciences and design
disciplines.
Multimedia
As well as regular papers (we have published six papers so far),
the journal seeks to facilitate multimedia publications, so that
research results that are best shown visually (or through sound)
can be published as well. This means that the journal hopes to
welcome also materials like pictures, sound, simulation, 3D
before too long.
Theme issues
Each year the journal dedicates special attention to one or two
theme issues. The first theme is Sustainability and will last
till December 31st. New themes will be announced very soon.
Publication upon acceptance
Each paper is published upon acceptance and is thus not
dependent on a rigid publication schedule. Per year the journal
opens an issue-in-progress, which is closed at the end of the
journal. This allows that, despite a flexible publication
scheme, your paper has a clear date of publication and volume
number and is archived in an unambiguous way.
Should you have any questions or remarks, please contact the
publisher at [log in to unmask] or the Editor-in-Chief
Henri Christiaans at the TU Delft

Submissions are welcome.

MYTH AND DESIGN: A GENERATIVE APPROACH
A one-week workshop by Pierre-Yves Jacopin on the subject of
myth analysis and its application to art and design will be
held on October 1-5, 2001 at the Media Lab of the University
of Art and Design Helsinki/UIAH. The workshop is organized
by Lily Diaz, as part of the work of the Systems of
Representation research group, in collaboration with Raimo
Laang.
The workshop deals with the subject of the interpretation
and analysis of mythical narrative using the methods
developed by Dr.Pierre-Yves Jacopin. The method is called
generative because it is based upon the simple idea that
giving account for how people create their way of life,
reinvent their stories and rites, and manufacture their
objects is a good way to understand them.

REVIEWS
* Hart, Chris. 1998. Doing a literature search. A
comprehensive guide for the social sciences. London: Sage
Publications.
Chris Hart's guide to the literature search process is a
thorough, systematic explanation of how to find, organize,
and use research material. It is a magnificent companion to
Hart's earlier guide to the literature review (DRN, v 6, n
5, May).
Like the earlier book, the literature search guide addresses
the social sciences in the large sense. Scholars in the
humanities, fine arts, and design will find it a specific
and useful tool. Hart explains how to find reference
materials, books and bibliographies, journal articles, and
official publications. He also addresses the gray
literature, an important source for scholars in design and
the arts. Finally, Hart discusses information technology,
and shows readers how to use the Internet and IT resources
fir advanced searching.
At every point, Hart provides clear descriptions, useful
sources, and specific notes on how to get the most value
from each source. Any student who opens this book can get
right to work with Hart's collection of up-to-date URLs for
Web resources.
This book is on the short list for research education book
of the year.

* Hock, Randolph. 2001. Friedman, Ken. 2001. The extreme
searcher's guide to Web search engines. A handbook for the
serious searcher. Medford, New Jersey: Information Today,
Inc.
The World Wide Web and the Internet are a little bit like
the world itself. They contain nearly everything anyone
might want, but it is often difficult for any one person to
find what he or she needs.
Randolph Hock's guide to Web search engines gives the how
and why of the major search engines, Web directories, and
meta-search tools. Each is described carefully with a rich
selection of useful information to enable a search that
takes advantage of the special features and characteristics
of each particular tool.
The book is supported by a helpful dedicated Web site at
http://www.extremesearcher.com
* Casti, John L. 2000. Paradigms regained. A further
exploration into the mysteries of modern science." New York:
William Morrow.
John Casti is an intellectual adventurer who explores the
frontiers of science to find out where we are headed. Like
many science writers, he was trained as a scientist himself.
Unlike many, he remains a working scientist appointed to the
faculties of both the Santa Fe Institute and the Technical
University of Vienna
Ten years ago, Casti wrote a book titled Paradigms Lost. It
was an account of six major mysteries of modern science. He
examined how live began, whether genes determine human
traits, the possibility of artificial intelligence, how
language develops in individual humans, whether intelligent
life exists elsewhere in the universe, and what quantum
physics tells us about the nature of reality.
In Paradigms Regained, Casti revisits these questions to see
what has been learned during the past decade. He opens with
a short, informative essay on the state of science today.
This includes a profile on science and scientists, along
with a few thoughts on what science cannot tell us. Then, he
gets to the six big questions.
This book is a short course on the central scientific
research of the past decade. In explaining these issues,
this book offers usable lessons on how to analyze and
understand research findings across disciplines. This may be
the most useful value of this book to scholars in a field
that draws on many disciplines, as design research does. The
book ends with a good section showing readers where to look
for deeper information.
Is language innate? Do genes determine human behavior? Does
quantum physics demonstrate that reality is a myth, or is
there a reality independent of the observer? Rather than
spoiling these mystery stories by revealing the conclusion,
I recommend this book as an intellectual thriller.
