DynCorp in Colombia: Outsourcing the Drug War
http://www.corpwatch.org/issues/military/featured/2001/dyncorp.html
Did you know that Washington now employs hundreds of contract employees
through U.S. corporations to carry out the Drug war Colombia and other
Andean countries? If these contractors get caught in an embarrassing
crime, or are killed, the U.S. government can deny responsibility for
their actions. What's more only a select few in Congress know of their
activities and their operations are not subject to public scrutiny or
accountability.
By far the largest U.S. contractor in Latin America is DynCorp,
headquartered in Reston, Virginia near the CIA, and Pentagon. The
company's website promotes it as an Internet technologies corporation.
Once you dig a little deeper, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary
high-tech start up. In fact, DynCorp is on the frontlines of the war on
drugs in Colombia.
Investigative reporter Jeremy Bigwood uncovers DynCorp's operations in
Colombia for CorpWatch. We have also acquired excerpts from DynCorp's
$600 million contract with the State Department. This is a must read
for anyone who remembers-or is too young to remember-the wars in Vietnam
and Central America.
