Dear Chris,
Many thanks for the copy of the current draft of the benchmarking
document. COPS members have had the chance to comment on this.
I haven't received a large number of responses but the general
view seems to be that the document has been well thought out and
that it fits the bill very well. A few specific comments were made.
- The MMath (and, in Scotland, Msci) programmes should be
dealt with a special cases, rather than simply as extensions
to the usual undergraduate degree programmes. There are
particular dangers that otherwise these degrees may be interpreted
as falling foul of the QAA Qualifications Framework and lose
the Master title. It would help greatly to guard against
this in the benchmarking document.
- It was suggested that more emphasis should be placed on
the importance of developing communication skills, including
references to individual and joint project work as essential
elements in developing spoken and written abilities.
- It was thought wise to avoid the criticism that we think too
much in terms of students proceeding to higher degrees. With
that in mind, the order of academic and professional work in
para 3.3.1 could be reversed.
- There was some concern that the value of a placement year in
sandwich courses had not been fully represented.
Thanks for all your good work on this.
Best wishes,
Adrian Bowman
