US War Against Terrorism
Failures? or Successes?
By our political correspondent
It has been four weeks that the United States B-2 Stealth Bombers and B-52s are
carpet-bombing Afghan cities and mountains, plains and villages, hills and
ditches, roads and streets, houses and hospitals, barracks and warehouses. What
is the result? Osama Bin Laden is still alive and safe at his hideout and Mullah
Omar and his government is more stable than a month ago.
But, Washington insists they are making progress in the war. What is this
progress about? What are the objectives of White House that it is pursuing
through this war? President Bush and his team including Secretary of State and
Secretary of Defense are asking people to be patient as this war may take months
rather years to reach its logical end. What are they up to? There is no match
between the military might of Afghanistan and US then why months and years? Why
they want to linger on the campaign?
These and thousands of other questions are hitting the minds of every sane
person in the World who has respect to innocence, life of innocent people and
above all respect for a human being. For them it is an equally brutal tragedy if
an innocent person dies in the WTC attack or in a village in Afghanistan.
They want to know: why the precision weapons are hitting homes and hospitals in
Afghanistan instead of bunkers of Mullah Omar and Osama Bin Laden? They want to
know: why US is pushing Pakistan deeply in the war knowing that the masses in
Pakistan do not support the US attacks on Afghanistan.
Though most of these questions are still unanswered, it is clear that the real
agenda of the United States was not the arrest or killing of Osama Bin Laden or
his associates. New Yorker reports that Mullah Omar's convoy in Kandhar was on
the target of US warplanes when the controllers were told not to fire at him and
let the convoy proceed without problems.
Le Figaro reports that CIA's head in Dubai visited Bin Laden in American
Hospital last July where he underwent treatment for kidney problems. He flew
back to Quetta after 10 days of treatment by a private jet, the newspaper adds
and the CIA official bragged among colleagues of having an interview with Bin
Laden.
Bin Laden is merely a hoax. He may have done all the sins in the World, but he
was not behind the tragedies of September 11 and the US Government knows it very
well. But, he is being used as a dummy target to implement the real agenda of
White House and that real agenda of the US is being unfolded in the region very
precisely and gradually.
The actual targets were not Mullah Omar or Bin Laden. The real targets were
General Parvez Musarraf and Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and unfortunately General
Parvez Musharraf walked into the well-laid out plans and is now in deep trouble.
The initial speeches of President Musharraf indicate that he was given the
impression that the air strikes on Afghanistan will be "targeted" and for a
"short period" to bust the so-called terrorists. But, as soon as the US military
took over the bases in Balochistan, the US Government openly declared that they
had long term plans - for months or even years to stay there.
The presence of US troops on Pakistan's soil created massive unrest in the
country, as expected because of the historical, traditional and religious bonds
between the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan. To flare up the sentiments of
the people in Pakistan, the US forces demanded more airbases and kept on
demanding facilities in Sindh and even Punjab provinces that do not share any
border with Afghanistan.
The US did not contend with these provocations and also started hitting civilian
areas in Afghanistan. Thought the US Generals and Pentagon officials attributed
these attacks on civilians as mistakes, it is simply unbelievable that precision
bombing devices dropped from the World's best known bombers B-2 and B-52 were so
inaccurate that they could hit homes two kilometers away? Not possible.
These bombings on civilian population were carried out intentionally to flare up
the public emotions and sentiments in Pakistan to a point where Pakistan's Army,
intelligentsia, politicians and business people - all get united against Parvez
Musharraf and the country faces a serious threat from with in.
Unlike its perceived target - killing or capturing Osama Bin Laden, the US was
really successful in destabilizing Pakistan with in four weeks. Today General
Musharraf is completely isolated by the people. He knows it that he would not be
able to live in Pakistan for a single day if he is not in the office.
And now among this situation the US is raising the questions about the security
of Pakistan's nuclear warheads. According to the US strategists, Pakistans
nuclear arsenal is not safe so what Pakistan should do is to hand over these
weapons to US for safe custody or deploy the US forces on Pakistan's nuclear
sites.
The whole US media is now discussing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal in the same way
as they put Bin Laden to the media trial. No solid information. No plausible
reasons. No clue of what they are talking about. But, they all have the same
opinion - US must take over Pakistan's nuclear weapons and sites. It seems that
the whole media has been told to orchestrate this theme for next few weeks as
they were told not to carry statements and videos of Bin Laden.
Here is the ploy. Had Musharraf refused cooperation to the US in so-called
anti-terrorism war, the US would have declared Pakistan as an ally of Mullah
Omar - Bin Laden coalition and would have bombed Pakistan's nuclear sites. Since
Musharraf supported US out rightly and thus eliminated the justifications to
attack Pakistan, the US went ahead with a dummy target - Bin Laden to move
forces inside Pakistan and to create such an environment where Pakistan could
not have any option but to hand over every thing to US.
We don't have confidence in Musharraf's strategic thinking and planning. In fact
he has proved himself a failure ever since he took over power in Pakistan after
a coup in 1999. He has no programme, no ideology, no brain to analyse the
military or political challenges being faced by the nation, and most importantly
no roots among the masses.
If Musharraf thinks that his policies can help Pakistan find a panacea for its
economic woes, he is wrong. At the one hand the US and its allies are lifting
sanctions on Pakistan imposed for multiple reasons and at the other hand
Pakistan's exports have been literally blocked. No country including US and its
closest allies such as Britain, Canada, UAE, Japan, France, Germany etc. is
giving visas to Pakistanis. Almost all the airlines of the World have stopped
flights to Pakistan. Numerous new problems are being created by PIA flights and
its passengers going abroad. Containers after containers of Pakistan's exports
are being returned from European and American ports. What a great hypocritical
policies.
Musharraf is doing what the US needs. He changed Army's top leadership just a
day ahead of the US attack on Afghanistan, arrested Pakistan's very respectable
nuclear scientists, removed senior Police officers in some cities only for being
religious minded, ordered law enforcing agencies to open fire on unarmed but
very angry protestors. All these actions helped creating and multiplying chaos,
confusion and uncertainty in Pakistan - some thing that the US requires to
implement its real plans.
Although his government is denying that they have not allowed the US forces to
enter the no-fly zones around Pakistan's nuclear sites, but who is going to
believe him? He had repeatedly said that Pakistan had given airbases to US only
for logistical purposes and not for attacking Afghanistan. But, everybody knows
that the airbases at Dalbandin and Pasni are actively used by the US forces to
attack Afghanistan.
General Musharraf should look at the history. What happened to his peer General
Zia-ul-Haq? He was a "closest friend" of Washington, he helped them win a war in
Afghanistan, but - he was dumped in a way that he could not even say bye to his
friends. General Musharraf should know that some one in the line of command will
also be getting ready to replace him when the US will complete its real agenda.
Of course US would not like to break up Pakistan or destabilize the region to an
extent where the things would not be under its control any more.
