Dear colleagues, I would be grateful if you could circulate this
information within your departments and institutions.
I am writing to announce the start of a new MSc in Assistive Technology at
Kings College, London. It is the first course of its kind in the UK and
will offer students a unique opportunity to study the design and
application of a range of assistive technologies from wheelchairs and
walking aids through to environmental controls and communication aids. The
key characteristics of the course are that it is:
MULTIDISCIPLINARY: Students will be recruited from the disciplines of
engineering, medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and
language therapy, social work and psychology and will be encouraged to
develop an understanding of how each discipline contributes to the delivery
of effective Assistive Technology services.
FLEXIBLE: Both full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) routes of
study are available
USER-FOCUSED: Students will be encouraged to develop and apply assistive
technologies with an understanding of the needs and desires of people with
disabilities
ACADEMIC & PRACTICAL: Students will have an opportunity to apply theory to
practice by
undertaking three, one-week clinical placements linked to specialist options.
EPSRC FUNDED: During the grant phase of the programme, some bursaries are
available for which students accepted on the course may apply.
VOCATIONAL: This course will benefit students who plan to work with
disabled or older people. They might plan to work directly in the service
sector as a therapist, social worker, or rehabilitation clinician or
engineer, or their interest might be indirect, working as a design
engineer, planner or administrator.
We are looking to have our first intake of full-time students in September
2001. For more details on the course and how to apply see our web site
