A brilliant idea! Cyril Smith is, of course, dead, but John Cahn (who worked with him at the University of Chicago and shared in some very interesting work) is still alive (at the National Institute of Standards and Technology), though he is terribly busy & you may have trouble getting any significant time from him.

Mr. Smith:
Thank you; that was my understanding as well. I assumed that copy
permission would have to come from the publisher. Should I seek out the
author as well? I would ultimately like to post the entire series of
articles that comprised a "debate" of sorts between E.M. Burgess and Dr.
C.S. Smith. Some of these articles appeared in The Antiquaries Journal,
while others came from a publication known as "Technology and Culture".
While dated, the above discussions make up some of the most sophisticated
research and discussion on maille ever published. Since I find myself
constantly citing these sources, I thought it would be helpful to the
armouring community if I could make these articles available via the Web,
since they are so long out of print. I've actually been given an original
copy of The Antiquaries Journal that contains Burgess' original article -
it's nearly 20 years older than I am!

>still alive and well and I have not heard anything to the contrary since.
