This is a call for papers for the upcoming 67th Annual Meeting of the SAA in
Denver Colorado (March 20-24, 2002).
We would like to invite submission of abstacts to the following session;
Session Title:
Experimental Archaeometallurgy: investigations into the social context of
metallurgical production in the past
Abstract:
Archaeometallurgy has sought to use the insights gained from metallurgical
science to explain various facets of different archaeological pasts. Early
archaeometallurgical work was often limited to assessing the technological
abilities of the peoples concerned and rarely fully considered underlying
social implications. One of the main vehicles in this process is
archaeometallurgical experimentation. The aim of this round table is to
discuss the evolution of archaeometallurgical experimentation from providing
an exclusively empirical materials science role to investigating the dual
perspectives of: (1) contributing to understanding past social settings and
(2) the influence of present social conditions on experimental practice.
