I don't know if it is any use to Quanyu Want that I dug up some bits of
clay moulds at Dalkey Island, Ireland, which had lug-and-socket keying. They
are published in Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, 66C2, 1968, on
pp.89ff, 147ff, and 184-5, the last being an apendix by Henry Hodges.
In Denmark however lug-and-socket keying is not found, but the valves are
made to fit perfectly on the outside when they are correctly mounted. The
referemce is given in the work above, which contains a lot of observations
that may or may not be interesting.
I had always supposed the two valves were made simultaneously around the
model, but I never tried doing it. What about cores? Do they shrink of
themselves, so they don't have to be pared down as I always supposed. Good
luck with your work.
Incidentally single envelopment moulds have been found in Denmark and
Poland for a certain kind of neckring.
