ANNOUNCING:
DISEASE MAPPING AND RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PUBLICH HEALTH - A TWO DAY COURSE
This course is designed to provide an introduction to
the area of disease mapping and risk assessment in
applications to Public Health and Epidemiology. The course
consists of sessions dealing with:
Basic concepts of disease mapping
Ecological analysis
Disease cluster assessment
Risk assessment around health hazards
The emphasis in the course will be practical and
participants will be involved in tutorials with a mapping
package. In addition, a review and demonstration of
Geographical Information Systems tools for disease mapping
will be provided. A novel feature of the course will be the
group examination of a case study.
Dr Andrew B. Lawson (University of Aberdeen) and Dr Fiona
L. R. Williams (University of Dundee) will present the
course. Dr Lawson is a World Health Organisation (WHO)
advisor on Disease Mapping and recently organised, with the
WHO, an International workshop on this topic, which has led
to an edited volume (included with the course). Dr
Williams has extensive experience within environmental
epidemiology, and in particular, the analysis of putative
health hazards.
This course, in different forms, has been successfully run
previously in the University of Aberdeen (1999 and 2000),
Catholic University, Leuven, Belgium (1998), University of
Gothenburg, Sweden (2000/2001), and at the International
Society for Clinical Biostatistics (ISCB) annual conference
Dundee 1998. The course is intended for epidemiologists
and public health workers who need to analyse geographical
disease incidence. In addition, the course may be of
interest to statisticians or geographers and planners who
deal with spatial disease data. Some
statistical/epidemiological background would be beneficial
but is not essential.
