As part of its review of Assessment Policy, and specifically the
arrangements for internal and external verification of marks, The Surrey
Institute discussed again the precise role and remit of external examiners.
One issue which arose was that of meetings between the external examiner
and students. Members of the working group could see both benefits and
disadvantages of such meetings, and agreed that further discussion should
be informed by practice across the sector.
It was therefore agreed that I should contact the mailbase to ask
colleagues:
1. Under your regulations, are meetings between external examiners and
students (outside of a viva voce examination):
a) complusory/the norm
b) encouraged
c) permitted but discouraged
d) not permitted.
2. If (a) or (b), why? What is the reasoning behind this? If (c) or
(d), why not? What led the institution to decide that these meetings were
unhelpful?
Please respond to me direct at [log in to unmask], and I shall post a
summary of replies to the mailbase in dur course.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.
Cheers
Jon
