At the University of Salford it is expected that all students are only
admitted to a course of study where their level of English has reached an
acceptable standard, e.g. IELTS, CPE, GCSE, GCE, TOEFL, TWE, SAT, ACT etc.
Where English is not of an approved standard, pre-sessional courses and
courses with International Foundation Years are available.
As such candidates are not permitted to use dictionaries in an examination
(except in certain language examinations in which the rubric will specify
use of dictionaries).

Subject: Language dictionaries in examinations
Dear all,
This issue has been raised again in our institution, and I see that
there is some discussion about this in the current THES.
At present we do not allow international students to use 'their
language/English' dictionaries in examinations. There was some
discussion of this on admin-student in 1999 (and practice seemed fairly
evenly split), but I was wondering whether there had been any changes
since then.
I'd be grateful if you could let me know current practice and whether
there is any debate about changing that practice within your
institution.
Thanks
Iain Rowan
